I had the immense honor of being a speaker at the Women in Tourism Southern Africa Conference and Expo 2023, held in the picturesque kingdom of Lesotho from November 27th to 29th. The event, themed “Accelerating Economic Growth Through Tourism Value Chains,” brought together passionate leaders, innovators, and stakeholders in the tourism industry from across the region.

One of the pivotal sessions was the “Women in Tourism Associations Dialogue,” moderated by Adv. Makhetha Motsoari. This session delved into the current state of women in tourism, exploring the challenges they face and the initiatives currently in place to support them. It was inspiring to see representatives from various associations, including WITLA and Tourism Limpopo Women in Tourism, share their insights and strategies for overcoming obstacles.

The Leadership Round Table, directed by Mme Sindiswa Mzamo, was another highlight. I had the privilege of participating in this session alongside esteemed colleagues such as Mr. Molupe Pheko from LTDC, Ambassador Mahmoud Thabit Kombo from Tanzania, and representatives from the Department of Tourism. Our discussion focused on identifying and addressing the challenges faced by women in tourism leadership roles and the steps needed to foster a more inclusive environment.

Masterclasses and Panel Discussions

The event also featured several masterclasses and panel discussions on crucial topics such as regional trade, export readiness, enterprise development, African gastronomy, and technology trends in the tourism industry. These sessions were insightful and provided practical knowledge that attendees could apply in their respective fields.
